Digital Download

The 'Digital Download' tab of a product is used to associate downloadable files with products in your online store. When a customer buys this product online, they will see a link to this file in the online receipt and in the receipt that is emailed to the customer. When your customers click on this link, they will be able to download the file.

There are two settings within this tab:

Field

Meaning

File Name

Use the browse button to put the file name (including the file path if necessary) of the file you want to associate.

Auto Ship

Select this if you want this product to be automatically marked as Shipped in downloaded orders.

You can set some other settings for digital download within the 'Ordering' tab of 'Business Settings'. These settings are:

Field

Meaning

Auto Ship Digital Download Products

Select this to enable a feature whereby digital download products in downloaded orders are marked as Shipped during the download. (The corresponding checkbox on the product determines this for each individual product - this checkbox just enables the feature.)

File Download Expiry Time

Specify here the number of hours you wish to give shoppers in which to carry out the download. A value of 0 here disables the digital download feature.

Exempt Digital Download Products From Shipping

Select this box to automatically exempt all your digitally downloadable products from incurring a shipping charge. It works when shipping is based on either 'Weight' or 'Quantity'.

Notes About Digital Download

1.  When a digital download file is selected, the 'Maximum Quantity' field for that product is set to 1 and is read-only.

2.  If you assign a file to a product and then associate that product with another product via a component, purchasing the component will provide the link to the file.

3.  All the files will be uploaded to a sub-folder within your online 'acatalog' folder called 'DD'. The filename is changed by Actinic in the uploaded site by adding a prefix of both the product reference and a random number. These are stripped off as the shopper downloads, i.e. the shopper receives a file named like your original.

4.  Your payment method should typically be restricted to a PSP (Payment Service Provider) that processes your customers' credit cards online. Otherwise there is a much higher risk that customers will order, and download, products using fraudulent details. The exception to this is if you software requires license keys, in which case it can be freely downloaded and you can send them the license key once you have validated their credit card details.

5.  Note that the digital download files are not included in a 'Site Snapshot' so if you import a Snapshot on a different machine the files must be separately copied to the correct location on the new machine.  For more on Snapshots go to Exporting A Snapshot.

Note: If you find that digital download is not working correctly (but the rest of your store is) there are some advanced technical considerations detailed in Advanced Digital Download Issues.
