Creating a List of Values to Select From

When adding a new user-defined setting (see Adding A New Variable), certain types of field allow you to offer the customer a list of values to select from.

List of Choices

When you select 'List of Choices' in the 'Type' field, you can switch to the 'Values' tab to set up the list.

To add a new choice to the list:

1.  Click 'New'.

2.  Enter the name of the choice in the field provided.

Repeat the steps above for each choice, and then switch back to the 'Basic Definition' tab when you are ready. You then set which of the values you want to use as the 'Top Level Value' and the 'Initial Value'.

You can also fine-tune the order of the choices by using the arrows at the side of the list in the 'Values' tab.

If you want the person using this field to be able to enter new values, rather than being restricted to the ones you provide, select 'Allow <New> as an option' in the 'Basic Definition' tab.

True/False

If you are creating a true/false field, where customers make a choice between two opposing choices, you can define the choice in the 'Values' tab.

Within the 'Values' tab, you can enter different labels for 'True/False' such as 'Yes/No' or 'On/Off'. To do this:

1.  Click the 'New' field.

2.  In the 'True Value Text' field, enter your positive choice e.g. 'Yes' or 'On'.

3.  In the 'False Value Text' field, enter your negative choice e.g. 'No' or 'Off'.

4.  In the 'Description' field you can enter a label to help you remember what the values are for.

5.  Click 'OK'.

Now you can highlight the new set of options in the list and change back to the 'Basic Definition' tab, and you will be able to choose your new options rather than 'True/False'.

To change back to using 'True/False' for this field, you can just go back to the 'Values' tab and re-select them in the list.

Restricting Certain Choices to Certain Content Categories

If you have set up a list of choices for a variable, it is possible to restrict certain choices to certain 'content categories'.

Content categories are a way of allowing Actinic to handle different types of product (or section, or fragment etc) in a different ways. More information about content categories is in Content Categories.

Once you have created a number of choices for the variable, switch to the 'Advanced Place of Setting Tab'.

Click the '+' next to any items in the tree that are selected. You will then see the content categories that have been set up for that type of content tree item.

Then click the '+' next to the content category name. You will then see a list of all the choices for that variable. You can now deselect any choices that you don't want to appear for certain content categories.

Once you click 'OK', you can test this by changing the content category of a product (or section, or fragment or whatever) and then seeing the effect this has on the list of choices that are available for the variable.
